Two students appeared before the High Court
charged with murder of a university student.
Dancun Livingstone Kimanthi of United States
International University (USIU) and Winnie Wairimu Kariuki of Kiambu Institute
of Science and Technology pleaded not guilty to the charge when they appeared
before Justice Nicholas Ombija.
They were charged that between June 30 and July
1 in Kiamaiko in Githunguri, Kiambu County, jointly with others not before the
court, they killed Sarah Akelo Aruwa.
The two were detained as police intensified
investigation into the murder of the final year USIU student, whose body was
recovered in a thicket in Ngewa.
Aruwa’s death came barely two months after the
kidnap of another USIU student, Melisa Ouko.
Kimanthi and Wairimu were remanded at Kileleshwa
Police Station as they are also expected to face separate charges of abducting
Aruwa and demanding Sh100,000 ransom.
more charges
They are expected to appear before Makadara
Court today to face the charges while the murder case will be mentioned on July
17.
On June 30, Aruwa was abducted and detained for
ransom but she had left a note and the phone number of a male student who was
meant to host her.
Her body was recovered five days after her
disappearance by police in Kiambu and the number she had left helped police to
track the suspects.
Police suspect some students in the university
were behind the abduction of Ms Ouko and the murder of Aruwa.
USIU confirmed that the student was in the
institution’s register.
Akelo’s body was dumped by police at the mortuary, they did not
bother to take her fingerprints to compare them with those at the central
registry to help the Flying Squad team that was looking for her.
“The trend by police of picking bodies and dumping them in
mortuaries without taking action on them is bad and is affecting our
credibility. It is not the first time,” said one senior officer who was angered
by the revelations. The girl’s mother, told journalists they identified the
body on Saturday, a week after the incident.
