Independence party KANU
has announced that it will be fielding a Presidential candidate in the next
General Election.
The party has also
stated that it will not enter into pre-election coalitions with other parties.
Gideon Moi, the party's
acting national chairman said the party would also front candidates for
parliamentary and County positions in the election.
"We are going flat
out to revitalise the party at the grassroots level, and make it a formidable
outfit in the next general election. We are convinced that we have what it
takes to take over power in the next General Election through the ballot,"
Gideon said.
Speaking during a rally
at Chebunyo trading centre, in Bomet County, Gideon said the party would embark
on grassroots elections in August.
"The delegates will
nominate a presidential candidate during the National Delegates Conference
later in the year, in preparation for the General Election," Gideon said.
Kanu did not field a
presidential candidate in the last elections as it chose to support President
Mwai Kibaki's second term in office.
Nick Salat and other
Kanu officials accompanied Gideon Moi. The team used the rally to kick off
countrywide campaigns to popularise the party after the exit of some former
national officials including Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta who joined
The National Alliance (TNA).
The former Baringo
Central MP hit out at political party hoppers saying they lacked foresight and
wanted to benefit from euphoria.
“Those leaders who are
moving from one party to another and claim to be good leaders are not fit to
hold any office. Kenyans should reject such leaders who are after their own
political survival and relevance,” he added.
Salat, the party’s
Secretary General, announced that grassroots campaigns would be centred on Rift
Valley, before moving to other regions of the country.
"In the coming
weeks, the re-energised team will move around Rift Valley Counties reactivating
the networks that had become dormant due to former leadership," Salat
said.
He disclosed that former officials had been
working from within to frustrate the party when they knew very well that they
would be ditching the party at an opportune time.
Kanu lost to the Narc coalition during the 2002 general election
and has since not recovered its foothold in the country's politics.
