The Interim Independent Electoral Commission is formulating the question and symbols to be used on the referendum on a new constitution. A consultative meeting between IIEC and Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional Review, popularly known as PSC, is underway at the Nairobi City Council’s County Hall.
The meeting is expected to help frame the question and symbols which by law (Constitution of Kenya Review Act Sec. 37) must be published within seven (7) days of the publication of the draft constitution. The Attorney General published the draft constitution on Thursday, 6th May, 2010. This means IIEC has up to Wednesday May 12th, 2010 to frame and gazette the question and symbols.
Simple, neutral and easy to distinguish symbols are sought for to help voter, especially the not so literate ones, to identify with his standpoint. The symbols should not resemble with those of registered political parties and should not also be an orange or a banana as was the case in the 2005 referendum.
In your opinion, what two symbols should IIEC use for the coming referendum on the constitution? What are the reasons for your choice? Send us your comments at symbols@iiec.or.ke
