The Minister for Medical Services has denied reports that his Ministry has not fully utilized funds allocated by Treasury this current financial year.
Reacting to the reports in a section of the media, Anyang Nyong'o stated that they had spent all the monies adding that they were in dire need of Sh800Million to ease the current drug shortage in public hospitals.
He said the funds for drugs, equipment and non-pharmaceuticals were transferred to KEMSA for procurement and re-stocking.
"There is therefore no idle money that has not been utilized as stated in the media reports. In actual fact, the Ministry requires additional funds from the Treasury to fully satisfy its needs during the current Financial Year" said the Minister.
He added" The Ministry has utilized all the funds as allocated by the Treasury in this financial year (2009/2010). The ministry has also issued the funds for construction to Hospitals"
Nyon'go said he had requested the Prime Minister to chair a meeting between them and the Treasury to discuss all the pending issues once and for all.
He further clarified that the Ministry of Medical Services has no allocation for projects on economic stimulus, as claimed.
On Wednesday, Treasury PS Joseph Kinyua revealed that Sh30 billion earmarked for development in the current financial year and released to ministries remains idle in bank accounts, hampering delivery of critical services to wananchi.
Addressing members of the Public Accounts Committee, Kinyua named the Health Ministry as one of the culprits.
Nyongo termed the information a misrepresentation of facts. He said the his ministry was allocated funds from the Treasury and spend them as follows:
1.Total allocation - Sh25 billion (recurrent and development).
2.Of this amount personnel emolument took Sh12, 372, 503,709 and Parastatals Sh6, 482, 923, 384.
3.Drugs - Sh2, 112, 010, 883
4.Equipment - Sh277, 000, 000
5.Construction and Rehabilitation - Sh484, 700, 000
6.Non - pharmaceuticals - Sh778, 988, 328
7.AIEs to Hospitals and Headquarters Administration - Sh2.4 billion
