UNIVERSITY SHUT DOWN

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 18 - The University of Nairobi has been shut indefinitely after four days of unrest over disputed union elections.

The decision to close the institution was made by the institution’s Senate on Tuesday.

The students have been on the rampage since Friday after they complained of interference in the University of Nairobi Students Association (SONU) elections.

On Monday, three students at the university were charged in court with incitement to violence following the riots.

Kimathi Nabea, Bernard Omondi and Alfred Mukiri however denied the charge before Nairobi Principal Magistrate Grace Macharia.

Mr Kimathi was also separately charged with possessing a sword. The three students were released on a Sh30,000 cash bail.
Higher Education Minister William Ruto had opposed a decision to disband the students union and had asked the institution’s administration to resolve the issue by Tuesday.
