The province had registered 2.9 million voters by Sunday when the manual voter registration exercise ended.
It is followed by Central province with 2.7 million voters while North Eastern province has the lowest number of registered voters at only 221,000.
The chairman of the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) Mr Ahmed Isaack Hassan announced that a total of 12.3 million voters had managed to register as voters by the close of the manual voter registration exercise for the August referendum.
Include tallies
He, however, stated that the figures do not include the tallies for some parts of the country such as the North Rift, upper Eastern and Coast provinces which have been hardest hit by the ongoing rains.
“It should be appreciated that some of the centres have been affected by the rains. For instance, North Rift region has not been able to retrieve materials from Turkana North and South constituencies, upper Eastern region and Coast region,” said Mr Hassan.
The specific areas whose official figures are yet to be compiled include Parath, Lokipoto, Kalelemo and Narogole in Turkana, North Horr and Illiret in upper Eastern and Bura at the Coast.
“IIEC yesterday (Wednesday) sought the assistance of the Kenya Police helicopters to retrieve these materials,” Mr Hassan added.
According to the figures, Nyanza province comes third with 1.7 million registered voters followed by Western province with 1.3 million voters.
It is followed by Nairobi with 1.2 million voters, Eastern province with 1.1 million voters and Coast province with 0.9 million voters.
