OCAMPO-NO NAMES

Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo Tuesday said he will be opening two cases at The Hague by the end of the year to prosecute 4 to 6 people believed to be the most responsible for the 2007 post election violence.

Ocampo who was speaking on Tuesday just hours before he winds up his 5 day visit to Kenya said the suspects will be presented to the pre-trial chamber by December this year.

He reiterated that he will use Kenya as an example to ensure that 2012 general elections are fair and peaceful.

In his 4th day visit to the country, Ocampo met with Kenyans for an open forum to sensitize them on the ICC processes.

He said investigations will take no more than seven months after which he expects to prosecute 4 to 6 people who orchestrated the street-level violence.

The prosecutor however refused to disclose any names, saying the names would be determined by the outcome of the investigations he has launched and not necessarily those mentioned in the Waki list and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reports.

Ocampo appreciated the interest demonstrated by Kenyans for the court and pledged to make Kenyans understand the ICC and its operations.

He however rubbished concerns that the ICC criminal justice will jeopardise the country's healing process accusing the perpetrators of violence of trying to hide behind national cohesion saying any forgiveness must be in tandem with the justice system.

Ocampo will Wednesday meet the two coalition principals, President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga where he is expected to lay his investigation plans ahead of his third visit later in the year.
