Four people were burnt to death after the vehicles they were traveling in caught fire following a head-on collision, a short distance from Maungu trading centre along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.
Officer Commanding Voi Police Division Herbert Khaemba said the two cars traveling in opposite directions collided head on at around 4.00 pm Wednesday.
Khaemba said two of the victims who were burnt beyond recognition were of Asian origin and were in a Carina car that was traveling towards Mombasa.
The police boss said another woman who was in the vehicle was rushed to Moi Hospital in critical condition. He however could not establish the degree of the burns she sustained.
The occupants of the other car, a Pajero traveling towards Nairobi also perished in the inferno.
Khaemba blamed the accident on speeding and over taking without due precaution.
He appealed to relatives of the victims to get in touch with the police to assist with the identification of the victims as no documents were salvaged from the burnt vehicles.
