Operations at the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) are set to go a notch higher following a donation of modern mobile phones that will enhance efficiency.
IIEC field personnel will now have mobiles, SMS and e-mail access to their headquarters from any location countrywide courtesy of the US embassy.
This was made possible by 250 blackberry mobile phones donated Tuesday by the US government at the price of 4.9 million shillings which comes with full internet service package.
The phones will be able to accurately map all IIEC registration and polling stations through the global positioning system-GPS.
The handsets were handed over to the commission by US Charge d'Affairs Mr Lee Brudvig at the IIEC's offices in Nairobi.
While receiving the package, IIEC commissioner Davis Chirchir said the new technology will used in the forthcoming South Mugirango by-elections.
