‘You can ARREST a police officer’ - Iteere

‘You can ARREST a police officer’ - Iteere

Friday, July 13, 2012 - Police commissioner Matthew Iteere has released a new report informing Kenyans that they have the authority of arresting police officers who are caught committing crimes.

Speaking to the press he told the public that they can arrest an officer and take him to the nearest police station for booking and charges. He warned the public against administering mob justice and said anyone caught will be charged and sentenced.

He however warned the public against arresting an armed officer as it may lead to injuries because the officer may fire his gun to save his life which he may think is in danger. He however informed the public to take an armed officer’s number and report it to the nearest police station.

This comes after a series of crimes committed by police officers alarmed Vigilance House leading to measures to be undertaken to curb the crimes.

Iteere further added that officers should be keen on their duties and offer protection to them instead of turning against them.

Elsewhere, Nairobi traffic police boss Patrick Lumumba has complemented his boss' assertions informing Kenyans that they have the authority of arresting police officers who are caught committing crimes and taking bribes.

Speaking to the press he also told the public that they can arrest an officer and take him to the nearest police station for booking and charges.

Lumumba was acting after a directive from Prime Minister Raila Odinga to the public to arrest traffic police officers and city council askaris caught harassing drivers and conductors.
Raila said this during the strike that was held by commuter buses at the Nairobi railways station. The strike was against the frequent harassment by traffic police officers and city council askaris who demand bribes from the drivers and conductors.
