NOT AGAIN: Explosives in Namanga border

Friday, July 13, 2012 - Police and KRA officials are investigating a consignment which was meant to be smuggled into the country through the Namanga border which was found to have harmful material.

Officials said two men approached them with a bribe, requesting them not to look into the contents of the container which lay at the border. The men wanted clearance to transport the container into the country via road.

The alarmed officials however denied the bribe and proceeded to opening the container and the men ran away. The men have since then gone underground and police are hunting them.

20 bags of potassium nitrate crystalline and 20 bags of sodium benzoate were in there, the fertilizer components are known for use in manufacturing fireworks, matches and gun powder.

The fertilizers are illegal in some countries for their use in terrorism activities. They are also popular in making explosives and rockets.

It is still unclear where the consignment was headed for or the use of the fertilizer. There are fears that they may have been meant for terrorist attacks.

A month ago two Iranian nationals were ambushed by police in possession of 15kg dangerous explosives in Mombasa.
