USIU ordered to give report on students’ safety

USIU ordered to give report on students’ safety

Fri. July 13th 2012 –Following the recent strings of kidnapping and murder cases at the United States International University, the government has ordered the institution to give a report on the security of the students. The government through the Ministry of Higher Education has directed the higher institution to issue a safety report of the students.

Margaret Kamar, the Minister of Higher Education, said that even though the issue is still in court, she has mandated the institution to give an internal report on the security of the students.

Pressure is mounting on USIU following the kidnapping of one Ms Serah Aruwa and her subsequent killing by abductors who were fellow students. Her body was found in Kiambu. Two male students from the same institution and a Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology female student have been arrested over her killing.

The Minster gave the orders while briefing the Parliamentary Education Committee on the action the government has taken to ensure the safety of students in the institution. The university is yet to do so. The three suspects sent text messages to Ms Aruwa’s family demanding sh 100,000 ransom to release her.

The same three have been charged for kidnapping another girl of the University of Nairobi in yet a different case. The girl was however saved but the suspects managed to elude the police. The Vice-Chancellor Freida Brown asked the police to improve security patrol in areas where students live outside the university premises.

The chair of the education committee expressed concerns and urged the government to increase security at the university.
