The rich also cry: CORRUPTION at KNBS

Wed July 11th 2012 -Anthony Kilele, the director of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics has been arrested together with the procurement manager, Fred Ayier, over corrupt dealings in a tendering process.

The two allegedly failed to comply with provisions of the procurement law. Officers of the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission wasted no time in arresting the two yesterday morning and took them to the Integrity centre where they questioned them for more than four hours and then recorded statements. They were then ordered to appear before the Anti Corruption today to answer charges related to corruption after being released on a free bond.

They will be charged with violation of section 29 (1) of the Public Procurement Act by jointly and willingly failing to use an open tendering method while procuring the storage space for census materials.

Kilele is however said to face further abuse of office charges for not properly conferring a benefit of sh 5.93 million and sh 1.46 million on a Banker by signing a cheque and voucher respectively in favour of BM Logistics Ltd, as opposed to section 46 and 48 (1) of the Anti Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.
