Raila carelessly spoke of Luos ‘refusing to make money’ yet each time he was approached by Luo professionals – businessmen and women as well as struggling entrepreneurs – trying to get legitimate loans or find legitimate business opportunities, which would only involve introducing them to many of his business contacts both locally and internationally, he refused to help them. 

Many of these Luo professionals and business people had spent their savings to support Raila’s campaigns. Many had also fundraised for him. They were not interested in shady deals. They didn’t want shortcuts. 

All they were looking for was a helping hand. Yet whenever Raila had an opportunity to speak to them, he always told them that they should go into business. Meanwhile, his consistent advice to those already in business was that they should work harder, ignoring the fact that that’s what they have been doing, sometimes for decades.......
