All cases touching on the General Election will be concluded in a month, Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has said.
The cases include that of determining the date of the poll, the delimitation of boundaries, census and another one on political parties.
These cases were filed at different times by Kenyans who say they are seeking to safeguard the Constitution on the General Election and matters around it.
“I will fast-track all matters touching on elections with a view to having all of them concluded by the end of August this year,” Dr Mutunga said on Thursday.
He was speaking with Prime Minister Raila Odinga when the PM paid him a courtesy call at his chambers at the Supreme Court to get a brief on the judicial reform plan for the next five years.
Dr Mutunga told Mr Odinga that the Judiciary Working Committee on Election Preparedness would soon roll out training for judges and magistrates to deal with poll offences and disputes.
“The Judiciary is holding discussions with other players in the election management sector and hope we will receive adequate support from the government to deliver a free, fair and credible election,” the CJ said.
Kenya’s Judiciary Transformation Framework was launched a month ago to guide the institution in living up to the dictates of the Constitution.
Key areas targeted in the reform will be speedy delivery of justice, changing of the institution’s structure, staffing and culture.
Others will be incorporation of information and communications technology in the judicial system to expedite cases.
“The pillars are interconnected and rest on the Constitution as the foundation for change,” Dr Mutunga said.
