A girls school in Western province has denounced calls for the introduction of miniskirts as part of school uniform. Butere Girls High have said those advocating for the wearing of miniskirts want to lower morals in schools and promote indiscipline. Led by the school’s boarding prefect in charge of grooming and cleanliness Ann Manyonge, the girls said do not support the call, adding that they will continue to dress decently.
Addressing other students on parade on Monday morning, Manyonge asked other girls to dress decently both in and out of school.  She said the short skirts are likely to expose schoolgirls to sexual harassment and rape. The school principal Dorah Okaalo said her school will maintain skirts which are one inch below the knees to instill discipline and uphold the respect the girls in the society. “We cannot allow short skirts in school and if girls wear them at home, then that will be a different case,” she said.
She urged parents to teach their daughters moral values, adding that decent dressing is part of the discipline and morality that they have instill in them.
Okaalo asked teachers to mould girls into responsible citizens by advising them to respect the African culture, which stresses the concealing sensitive parts of the body. She said it is in school where children are moulded into responsible citizens. “Dressing and discipline are vital to development of a child and schools should take a stern stand because they are formative centres,” said Okaalo.
Education minister Mutula Kilonzo had sparked off the debate over the weekend when he is reportedly said schoolgirls not be dressed as nuns. Civil society groups, religious and political leaders had vehemently called on the minister to apologize and resign over the remarks which they termed as unfortunate and amounting to promoting immorality in schools. But yesterday, the minister denied advocating for short skirts in schools and even at the workplace.
