President Kibaki assented the Statute(Miscellaneous Amendment) Act
2012 on Friday setting stage for the by-elections in Kangema, Ndhiwa and
Kajiado North constituencies.
The president amended the provisions of the the
Elections Act and thereby enabling the Speaker of the National Assembly to
issue writs for the pending by-elections in Ndhiwa, Kajiado North and Kangema
Constituencies.
The Kangema seat fell vacant when John Michuki
passed on after illness in February. At the time of his death he was minister
for Environment.
Ndhiwa and Kajiado North seats feel vacant after
Orwa Ojodeh and prof George Saitoti died in a helicopter crash in the
Ngong on June 10.
Saitoti was minister for Internal Security and
Ojodeh an assistant minister in the same docket.
Eyes are now trained on Speaker Kenneth Marende
on when he will declare the seats vacant to allow Independent Electoral and
Boundaries Commission to announce election dates.
While the seats may attract a lot of interest
politicians will be cautious particularly with spending given that the General
Election may be held in December 2012 or latest March 2013.
A court decision is awaited which will settle
the election date.
