Kenyans seeking to replace lost national identity cards have been given a reprieve after the Ministry of Immigration waived the Sh300 fee demanded at registration.
Mr Otieno Kajwang’, the minister, under whose docket the issuance of cards falls, said the fee would be reintroduced after the General Election.
This move will be seen as a deliberate effort by the political class to ensure maximum voter registration.
“My ministry is aware of the tribulations most Kenyans undergo when raising the Sh300. I have therefore ordered that those seeking replacement of lost ID cards not to be charged”, Mr Kajwang’ said in Ndhiwa District.
He added that contrary to claims, his ministry had gone to lengths to ensure that all Kenyans above 18 years have ID cards.
“Our newly married women are no longer forced to seek consent from their parents’ while the issue of affidavits has also been done away with.”
Mr Kajwang’ said any Kenyan without an ID before the next polls would have himself or herself to blame and not the ministry.
The announcement is among measures such as mobile registration centres, seen to be seeking to increase the number of voters in the country.

Director of the National Registration Bureau, Mr Reuben Kimotho, had also raised an alarm that they were producing fewer cards compared to those who had attained 18 years.
He also noted that they had orders to process 20,000 cards against their capacity of 60,000.
