Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi on Saturday took his campaign to President Kibaki’s Nyeri backyard and promised to carry on with the President’s legacy if he succeeds him.
Mr Mudavadi, who is expected to vie for the presidency on a UDF party ticket, promised to protect the President in retirement and avoid a scenario such as happened in other African countries where leaders are victimised and not allowed to retire in peace.
“President Moi ensured Kenyatta and his family were protected when he took over, and Kibaki has done the same to Moi family. I will ensure that President Kibaki is also protected,” he said.
Mr Mudavadi called on Kenyans to respect its leaders, saying it was unfair to blame everything on an individual tasked to lead over 40 million Kenyans.
The Deputy Prime Minister said he would carry on with development projects President Kibaki had initiated to spur the country’s economy.
He called on leaders to shun tribalism, and bare knuckled politics which he noted were stifling development and affecting Kenyans normal way of life.
The Sabatia MP who is running for the presidency on an United Democratic Front Party (UDF) party, said peace, stability, strong economy and creating employment for the youths would form his key agenda once he is elected to the presidency.
Mr Mudavadi was speaking at the St Peters ACK Church Hall in Nyeri during a leaders’ meeting, and later toured development projects within Nyeri Town.
Industrialisation assistant minister Nderitu Muriithi, who invited Mr Mudavadi to speak, hit out at Lugari MP Cyrus Njirongo over his disparaging remarks that the Thika superhighway project was set to benefit a particular community.
Ikolomani MP Bonny Khalwale urged Mr Mudavadi to seek the unity of other aspirants especially those from Central Kenya, and come up with a formula that would make him win the presidency, without creating divisions in the country.
“I urge you to speak to presidential hopefuls Peter Kenneth, Martha Karua and Uhuru Kenyatta and other presidential hopefuls so that we can come with a formula to win the presidency and at the same time keep the country united,” he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister is expected to hold a church fundraising in Endarasha area in Kieni constituency on Sunday, wrapping up a two-day tour of President Kibaki’s backyard, seen as entreaty mission to win over the central Kenya voting bloc that would be up for grabs after the president retires next year.
