The coming of night is raising fears in Kisumu as gunmen and burglars terrorise residents. Not even government offices are safe.
The latest on the list of victims is the provincial state counsel whose office was broken into and 23 computers stolen last Thursday.
Ministry of Youth offices within the district headquarters were also broken into last week and 12 computers stolen. Ironically, these offices are guarded by police.
Attracting investors
Business people in Kisumu say insecurity will erode the gains made in attracting investors to the town.
Mrs Linet Atieno, a car hire operator, said her drivers have been carjacked several times in the last month, and she is contemplating relocating.
Police records show a steady increase in carjacking and robbery-with-violence cases, although police deny any upsurge.
Four people were charged with theft of motor vehicles and spare parts in January while the figure increased to 13 in February and March, 14 in April and 25 in June.
