As the clock ticks towards the General Election,
presidential hopeful Kalonzo Musyoka has moved to consolidate his power base in
Ukambani.
The Mwingi North MP will next week have a
three-day tour of the region, which has been organised by Kamba elders before
moving to other parts of the country.
The tour, according to the organisers, will be
used to “pray” for the VP and send him out to hunt for votes from other
counties ahead of the polls.
“The meetings will be used to galvanise votes
and secure the entire Ukambani region for Kalonzo as he moves to reach out to
other Kenyans,” said his spokesman, Kaplich Barsito.
“We want to lock the region by having the Kamba
vote in one basket and allow the VP to traverse the country to sell his
ideologies to Kenyans,” he told The Standard.
The council of elders, headed by a former
Permanent Secretary Sammy Mbova, has cautioned Kalonzo against “dreaming” of
bowing out of the race to State House.
VP WARNED
“I have been warned that it is suicidal for me to imagine that I should quit the race,” Kalonzo said in a recent meeting in Kathiani constituency.
“I have been warned that it is suicidal for me to imagine that I should quit the race,” Kalonzo said in a recent meeting in Kathiani constituency.
The elders have scheduled the first rally at
Machakos town on Monday before going to Wote town in Makueni County on
Wednesday.
According Mbova, the third and last prayer
meeting will be held on July 13 and 14 in Kitui and Mwingi towns.
The VP is trying to build a strong political
alliance with leaders across the county. Recently, he announced he would
form an alliance with Mvita MP Najib Balala. He described it as “an alliance of
patriots with the same vision for the country standing against those who preach
hate”.
Balala praised the Mwingi North MP describing
him a friend of Muslims.
“He has taken care of our interests as Muslims
and people of the Coast,” he said.
However, it is still not clear whether other
presidential aspirants from the G7 alliance would settle for Kalonzo as each
has launched a political party and is busy recruiting members across the country.
