Couple charged for Chase Bank robbery


THURSDAY July 19th 2012 - A couple was charged for robbery yesterday in connection with the Chase Bank loss of sh 25 million. Mr. Justus Mwangi and his wife Catherine Gathoni were last Tuesday arrested at a house in Mwiki, Kasarani, with money suspected to be part of the money stolen cash from Chase Bank on Monday night.

The two denied the charges of burglary and handling stolen money before Kibera Principal magistrate. The man and wife are suspected to be among the gang that in a movie kind of fashion raided Chase Bank in Kileleshwa on Monday.

The first count alleged that the two together with their accomplice not in court, raided the Riverside head office of Chase Bank and stole sh25 million, while the second count stated that they were allegedly found in possession of sh 2.5million Kenya shillings and foreign currency valued at sh 3.4million. 

The two had applied for bail but the prosecution put up a strong defence stating that the couple be remanded for three days until the investigations are completed.

The police had launched a search of more suspects, including two security guards who went missing after the theft. It is still not known whether the security guards were involved in the robbery or had been killed by the robbers.

The magistrate directed that the two must be taken to court tomorrow.
