WIPER Democratic Movement will revise its constitution to create mechanisms for dispute resolutions ahead of the general election, the party's national executive council has decided. "This is part of the process of strengthening the party before going to the general election," party secretary general Mutula Kilonzo said.
A committee comprising Yatta MP, Charles Kilonzo, Defence assistant minister David Musila and nominated MP Mohamed Affey has been formed to oversee the process.
Mutula, who is also Justice minister, said Kenya has changed and those yet to realise this are in for a shock ahead of the general election. "Those who attempt to use violence to get to power and other crude methods like bribery will be in for a big shock as they will suffer disqualification and probably jail terms," Mutula said.
He was speaking to the press at Maanzoni Lodge in Machakos after the party's national executive council meeting. The meeting was also attended by Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka who is the party leader.
Kalonzo said wiper party will work with like minded people to form mergers and coalitions ahead of the general election so as to ensure victory. "We recently signed an MOU with Kanu and PNU and now we are equipped to renegotiate in line with the Political Parties Act," Musyoka said.
He added that politicians have to be very careful this time round as the electoral commission will have prosecution powers and those still embracing impunity could find themselves in jail. "We must end political thuggery in this country once and for all. Our new constitution will ensure order and we all have the responsibility of upholding it," Musyoka said. He added that those who fail to abide by the rule of law will have themselves to blame as order has to be maintained at all costs.
Conspicuously absent from the meeting was party chairman Samuel Poghisio and chief whip Johnston Muthama. The latter was absent with apology. Rebel party legislator, Kiema Kilonzo kept away from the meeting.
Other MPs present were Issaac Muoki, Gedion Ndambuki, David Musila, Philip Kaloki, Daniel Muoki, Victor Munyaka, Itwiku Mbai and Mohamed Affey.
