Seven people have been killed in a road accident involving a matatu, a lorry and a motorcyclist at Muguga along Nairobi - Naivasha highway.
Six passengers aboard a Limuru bound matatu and a motorcyclist were reportedly killed. However, three people aboard the lorry, which was ferrying fish from Mbita, Homabay County to Gikomba market in Nairobi survived the accident.
According to Deputy Traffic Commandant Samwel Kimaru, a speeding trailer tried to overtake the lorry from the left side but on realising the road ahead was narrow, the driver of the trailer swerved and hit the truck pushing it off the road.
The truck, which was transporting fish from Mbita, hit the middle wall separating the dual carriageway before it rolled hitting the motorcyclist and killing him on the spot.
The matatu which was a few meters behind the motorcyclist ran into the lorry and killed six people instantly.
However, the matatu driver Fredrick Mugane Njoroge sustained chest injuries and a broken left arm in the 7.30am accident.
The motorcyclist, who was identified as Simon Njoroge had dropped a client at Kiambaa Shopping Centre and was heading back to the bus terminal in Muguga popularly known as Heha Tano.
“He bought the motorcycle early this year and had employed a rider, but five months ago, he quit his town job and joined us in the boda boda business,” said Mr Kamau, a colleague.
Speeding trailer
The lorry driver, George Okumu Okoth sustained serious head and chest injuries and fractures on his lower limbs.
His colleague Victor Moses Juma said that they left Mbita on Thursday night at around 10pm for Nairobi and were to deliver a consignment of fish to City and Gikomba markets.
He said that he saw the trailer speeding from the left side of their lorry.
“We were almost parallel to each other when suddenly the transit good truck hit and ripped off the left side of our lorry, setting us rolling to the other side of the road,” said Victor from his hospital bed.
The other passenger Albert Ogutu sustained hand and head injuries.
