MAKADARA MP Gideon Mbuvi Sonko has appealed to the authorities charged with police reforms to fast-track the process. Sonko said he was concerned over delay to implement the reforms in police even after the National Police Service Act was enacted. The legislator said there is need for the process to be fast-tracked so that it force is compliant with the new constitution. He said, “It is unfortunate that police still ‘manhandle’ the public instead of treating them with courtesy.”
Sonko said the new constitution granted citizens sovereign powers in Chapter Six and police should strive to uphold it. The MP was reacting to recent harassment by police when he and his constituents staged a demonstration. He called on the team meant to initiate the recruitment of Inspector General, Deputy Inspector General of Police and a new CID director to spearhead the process.
He appealed to the team to be independent and to work professionally in efforts to get the force a strong team of leaders who will spearhead the required reforms. The MP said the team should uphold the provision that requires one of the three top police commanders be a woman. Sonko was speaking at Nyali beach hotel in Mombasa when he joined Radio Africa employees in Coast during their end-year party. The party was attended by Radio Africa general manager Martin Khafafa and chief accountant Elijah Kamunya.
