Police are still on the trail of thieves who last Thursday stole 32 heifers that are used to conduct experiments on livestock vaccines.
Industrial Area police boss Atuti Moturi said his office had neither recovered any of the animals, nor arrested anyone.
“We are still investigating the incident. As at today (Monday) we have not yet made any arrests. No animal has been recovered,” he said in a telephone interview.
The animals, said Mr Moturi, were being kept in an open field within the premises of the Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute, explaining how easy it was for the theft to take place.
But questions have now emerged on how the animals were rounded up and stolen without the knowledge of security guards at the institute.
A source at the institute said the animals were being used for all manner of experiments, a fact known within the area, and the management never thought they could ever be stolen.
“This explains why they were left at an open field…they were so sure that the animals would not be stolen,” said the source .
Following the theft on Thursday, the management of the institute raised the red flag over the possible sale of poisonous meat in the city and its environs during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

The institute’s CEO Geoffrey Muttai said they were baffled when they found the livestock missing at their Nairobi’s Industrial area animal holding area.
The animals had been injected to test for foot and mouth disease. “We normally use them for what is known as animal challenge where we test our vaccines,” Dr Muttai said, advising Kenyans not to eat uninspected beef.
He also warned that the animals should not be mixed with others.
