There is mounting frustration over the delay in filling the vacant position of director general of the National Environmental Management Authority (Nema).
A month after the Nema board forwarded names of three shortlisted candidates to the Environment ministry, the names have not been forwarded to President Mwai Kibaki for appointment.
Environment PS Ali Mohammed confirmed that the shortlisted candidates are still at the ministry and have not reached the President’s desk.
Consumer Federation of Kenya has expressed concern over the delay saying political interference could be at play.
Ministry officials are divided
“Why is it taking too long for the names of shortlisted candidates to be forwarded to the President? Is somebody trying to tamper with the list?” asked Cofek CEO Stephen Mutoro.
But the PS said the ministry was still counter-checking whether the interviews conducted by the board were fair and transparent.
“We are also reviewing the candidates to ascertain whether they meet constitutional requirements for the office” he said.
Sources however indicate that top Ministry officials are divided over the shortlisted candidates who include Prof Jacob Kibwage; Dr Abdirizak Nunow; and Prof Geoffrey Wahungu.
The current acting director Dr Ayub Macharia did not make to the shortlist since he lacks the 15 years mandatory experience required to run the institution.
