The Kenya Anti Corruption Steering Committee was alarmed yesterday after the Star carried an exclusive story on irregular tendering in its secretariat. We are informed that the commissioners and secretariat members went into a meeting to discuss the issue. Instead of trying to ascertain whether Sh13.8 million was lost in flawed tenders and non compliance of procurement regulations, they mandated the secretariat to hire a private investigator to find out who leaked the report to the Star. Corridors is wondering why the committee should spend taxpayers money on a private investigator instead of finding out how the funds should be recovered.

Corridors is informed that there are intrigues in the police force. Apparently, senior police officers who fear they may be replaced are bent on ensuring their would-be successors are edged out systematically. Our mole tells us the high ranking cops have identified their would-be replacement and are planning to transfer them or promote other junior officers to their positions. This has led to discontent in the Mathew Iteere-led force.

Two factions of the Kanu party found themselves in an awkward position last weekend as two sets of names were forwarded to an NGO which was sponsoring two offices per a political party for a tour of the US. However, at JKIA, the Uhuru camp carried the day as two officials allied to him finally made it onto the plane with the Gideon Moi allies crying foul.

Mystery surrounds Sh10.5 million withdrawn from a bank off Harambee Avenue in Nairobi, from an account operated by one of the coalition parties, only three days to the Kitutu Masaba by-election held late last month. The information was unwittingly leaked to a bank customer seeking loose change. A bank manager told the client they were short of loose money since the party had withdrawn the money in small denominations. It is now suspected that the money was headed to Kitutu Masaba to fund an unknown mission.
