Maasai leaders have told Internal Security Minister Prof. George Saitoti to run for Presidency in the next’s general elections.
Led by an assistant minister Joseph Nkaissery and Samburu East MP Rapheal Letimalo, they said that it’s now time for Maasai community to support their own for top seat.
The leaders made remarks at the weekend during fundraising in aid of Esokon Primary School in Transmara District of Narok County, where Prof. George Saitoti was the chief guest. Kilgoris
MP Gideon Konchellah ,Transmara County Council chairman Daniel Seitai, Seasons CEO Daniel ole Kiptunen and PNU alliance organizing secretary Peter Sabala attended the function.
“It’s now time to support our son that’s is Prof. George Saitoti who is experienced in terms governance ,”said Nkaissery, who is also defense assistant minister and with his comments were greeted by cheers from the crowd as they stood up saluting him for making the comments.
Speaker after speaker use the platform to expressed confidence in Kajiado North Legislators’ saying he has national outlook and his experience deserve him the position. Kajiado Central MP added that the mini-reshuffle conducted by President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga sidelined the Maasais community.
“We support the ODM party in 2007 unanimously yet we were rewarded a low key ministry of national heritage and culture which is being headed by William ole Ntimama,” said Nkaissery while adding that he‘s being pushed by his people on the appointments.
He urged Prof. Saitoti not surrender or retreat in the race for the top seat or else he would face the wrath of the community.
“If you will not declare very soon, I will take the community‘s mandate in the quest for state house,’he said.
On his part, Letimalo said that Maasai community has been sidelined for long be it ministerial or top government appointments and now it is time backed Prof.Saitoti to end these unfair processes.
Sabalan said that Prof.Saitoti has united the Maasai community and assisted them during Mau Narok Land tussle which is the centre of conflicts between the Maasais and two prominent families.
Responding to the request, Prof George Saitoti refused to declare his candidature despite pressure to do so acknowledging the various issues raised while saying when the right time.
Prof. Saitoti called upon the locals to stop retrogressive behaviours which back track education in the region.
