President Barack Obama’s uncle has been arrested for drunk-driving in a US state.
Mr Onyango Obama, 67, was also detained as an illegal immigrant in a Massachusetts jail.
Mr Onyango, who went to the US in 1960, was arrested on August 24 outside a Framingham restaurant when he failed to obey a stop sign and almost rammed a police car.
Reports of the arrest first appeared in a local newspaper last Thursday, but it was not immediately confirmed that he was President Obama’s relative.
According to another report by The Washington Times, when Mr Onyango was asked during his booking whether he would like to make a phone call, he replied: “I think I would like to call the White House.”
President Obama wrote about Mr Onyango in his memoirs Dreams From My Father where he referred to him as the “long-lost” uncle.
Mr Onyango is alleged to have said that the police officer should have given way to him. The police officer said he had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting Mr Onyango’s car, but the US leader’s uncle insisted he did not hear any “screeching of tyres”.
According to Framingham District Court records, a breathalyser test showed Mr Onyango had exceeded the state blood alcohol limit.
He was charged with driving under the influence and driving to endanger. He was also issued with a traffic ticket for not using a turn signal.
Police also unearthed an arrest warrant issued against him after he defied an earlier deportation order.
