President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga have sent messages of goodwill to Muslims as they celebrate Id-Ul-Fitr Wednesday.
The two principals lauded the Muslim community for supporting hunger stricken Kenyans in northern parts of the country even as they observed the holy month of Ramadhan.
“I especially laud you for showing compassion to fellow Kenyans faced with hunger in parts of the country,” President Kibaki stated in a statement.
“The Head of State expressed hope that as Kenyans mark this holiday in solidarity with their Muslim brothers and sisters, they will espouse the ideals of self sacrifice, prayer and generosity,” the statement from the Presidential Press Service (PPS) said.
Mr Odinga also congratulated Muslims worldwide for observing the holy month with devotion.
“The month of Ramadhan found our country in the middle of a devastating drought and food shortage. All the same, our Muslim faithful, undeterred by the unfortunate events, went on to carry out their obligations to the poor and the less fortunate and shared the little food they had as demanded by their faith,” the PM said.
He added that despite the biting hunger, Muslims across the country had gone out of their way to donate food and other essentials to starving Kenyans.
“As you celebrate, I urge you to join other Kenyans, in committing to safeguard the gains that we have attained in the new constitution and keep watch over the document to ensure its faithful implementation in word, spirit and letter,” he added.
A similar message came from Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka who lauded Muslims for demonstrating fidelity to the requirements of their faith.
“Fasting is an opportunity to deny oneself some pleasure and instead focus on the needs of others and personal spiritual nourishment,” he said.
He wished the Muslims and the rest of Kenyans a happy Idd ul Fitr and called on all Kenyans to unite in their support in the implementation of the new constitution.
The VP also cautioned drivers to be careful when driving on the roads to avoid loss of life during the festivities.
