Archbishop Dr David Gitari has pleaded with church leaders to call off their much-publicised launch of the ‘No’ campaign against the Proposed Constitution.
Gitari said such prayer meetings are likely to heighten tension and could divide the flock. He said the church should instead be pushing for reconciliation.
Addressing a press conference at his rural home in Embu today, Gitari said the launch of ‘No’ campaign by church leaders excludes many Christians who support the Proposed Constitution.
He said prayer meetings should not be convened to push for a divisive political agenda.
Gitari wondered what would happen if Christians in the ‘Yes’ team decided to hold a similar meeting at the same venue.
"In case the ‘Yes’ campaign receives overwhelming support during the referendum, it would then appear that God hears the politicians more than the current church leaders," he said.
But in a swift rejoinder, Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi dismissed Gitari, saying the retired clergyman had been hired to push for the draft by some foreign envoys.
"Gitari and the envoy are good friends. We also know the envoy is financing the ‘Yes’ team," Linturi claimed.
Linturi asked Gitari to respect the opinion of the ‘No’ team.
