Two people died on the spot while several others were injured when the bus they were travelling in overturned along Keroka-Kisii highway Wednesday.
Kisii Traffic  Base Commander James Ekwenye said the mini -bus ferrying 51 passengers from Nairobi was headed for Kisii town when it overturned at  a sharp corner at Bobaracho, in the  town's outskirts.
Speaking to KBC on phone, deputy traffic Commandant Samuel Kumaru said the matatu was overloaded and was speeding contrary the road safety regulations. The victims' bodies were moved to Kisii Level 5 hospital mortuary. The accident occurred at about 10am.
According to Ekwenya, the whereabouts of the  driver  and conductor of the ill-fated vehicle was yet to be  established as  they were feared to be among the injured receiving medication at the hospitals.
The base Commander promised to a give a comprehensive report upon visiting the causalities at the    hospitals.
During the month, three  accidents roads, two  of them fatal, have occurred in the area, in which three people  perished, disclosed Ekwenye attributing the low death toll to vigilance area  by traffic police  officers and the public.
Elsewhere, earlier at 6 am a mini truck driver was killed when his vehicle crashed on two other trucks on the Nakuru-Naivasha highway. Kimaru confirmed that driver was headed to Nakuru from Gilgil when the vehicle suddenly veered off the road and hit an oncoming truck on the opposite side.
However, Kimaru said that the newly introduced harsh road safety penalties have reduced road carnage in this festive season compared to past years.
Elsewhere, three people, among them a police officer, were last night shot and wounded in a shooting incident in Nairobi's Eastleigh estate.
Nairobi Area police boss Moses Ombati, said police who were on patrol in the area heard gunshots and rushed to the scene only to be met with gunshots which injured one of them but they hit back injuring one gunman.
He said the incident happened at a miraa den when three gunmen went looking for a certain man.
When they were informed the person they wanted was not there, they opened fire and injured one person.
He said one of the victims is a suspected thug who managed to escape on foot. Ombati said the injured officer and the first victim are in hospital in stable condition.
Police are looking for the injured gunman.
