Two people died while 10 others survived with serious injuries in an accident involving three vehicles, a truck and motorcycle in Kibarani, Mombasa County.
A pedestrian and motorcyclist died on the spot after they were run over by the truck which was travelling from Changamwe on Saturday evening.
Some of those injured in the 5pm accident at an area marked as a black spot were taken to Coast General Hospital while others were taken to different private hospitals due to the almost month-long strike by nurses.
The accident caused a serious traffic jam on the Makupa causeway.
Coast provincial traffic boss Joshua Omukata said the truck driver lost control of the vehicle and hit two vehicles and a motorcycle travelling in the opposite direction.
“We are investigating what happened and those suspected to have caused the accident will be charged in court,” said Mr Omukata.
He warned motorists against flouting the new traffic rules which came into effect early this month.
He said police would be closely monitoring public service vehicles to ensure they are not overloaded and the drivers are not speeding.
Head on collision
Last week, 31 people were injured in two separate accidents on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
In one accident, 28 people were injured after a bus travelling to Mombasa collided with a lorry at Maungu. The victims were taken to the Moi District Hospital in Voi town.
The hospital’s clinical officer Martha Mwachia said most of the victims were treated and discharged.
Two people are still being treated at the hospital while another two have been transferred to the Coast provincial hospital.
Also on the same road at Manyani, a family heading to Mombasa for the festive season was involved in another accident after a saloon car hit their vehicle while overtaking.
Ms Mwachia said the woman and two of her children were in stable condition and were responding well to treatment.
“These three came to the hospital after they collided with another car around mid day,” she said.
Mr Omukata warned drivers to be cautious during the festive season to avoid loss of lives.
“While celebrating, let motorists drink responsibly to avoid road carnage,” he said.
