Corridors of Power

A hotel closely linked to one of the presidential candidates may soon be demolished as it is reportedly built on a road reserve. The Roads ministry had in December last year published a gazette notice indicating that the plot where the hotel stands was meant as a road reserve for one of the many bypasses being built to ease congestion in the city and its suburbs. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority says it is only a matter of time before they bring down the hotel.

Employees of a parastatal under the Education ministry are up in arms after they were turned away from various hospitals where they had gone to seek treatment. It seems that even though they are being deducted their NHIF contributions, the same is not being remitted to the fund. The private medical insurance scheme for which the parastatal spent Sh50 million to set up is also not helping as the scheme's insurance cards are not being accepted. The angry staff want the ministry and the Ethics andAnti-Corruption Commission to probe the matter.

One of the stand up comedians has found himself in a tight spot after he was paid Sh60,000 to MC an event. The man pocketed the cash but did not honour the agreement and refused to refund the money forcing his client,— a foreign national— to report him to the Kilimani police station. It seems the comic might soon find himself facing charges of obtaining money by false pretenses. The policemen, hoping to save the comic further embarassment, have asked the comic to refund the money and forestall any prosecution.

People on television seem to be larger than life. A well known TV personality who hoped to get his brother out of a tight spot— a police cell— was rudely brought down to earth in a rather rude manner. The man went to the station and tried to intimidate the junior policemen on duty by dropping names of police and political personalities who he was on a first-name basis. Undeterred by his bragging and his arrogant demand that they release his brother, the junior officers called their boss who arrived at the station and immediately ejected the television personality!
