Over 300,000 candidates who sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exam will know their results on Wednesday.
Education minister Sam Ongeri will release the results at Mitihani House in Nairobi, where provincial directors of Education will be present to collect the results for their respective regions.
But the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) secretary Paul Wasanga said candidates can still access their results by logging onto the council’s website www.knec.ac.ke and keying their index numbers.
They can also be received by sending a short text message (SMS) including the candidates’ index number to 5052 on the mobile phone, immediately after Prof Ongeri announces the results.
He noted that it was important for subscribers to only send one SMS to avoid jamming the system and causing inconvenience to the other users.
“Candidates who were involved in any form of examination irregularity have had their results cancelled and they have been advised so in writing through their respective school principals before release of the results,” Mr Wasanga noted.
He added that the Council will not re-mark any cancelled results.
He went on: “Candidates who have their results withheld will receive a letter through their head teachers explaining why the results have been withheld until they submit the required documents, previous KCPE examination details for their results to be released.
“Such candidates must submit the documents through their respective schools and not directly to the council, by March 31, 2012 failure to which it will be deemed that the candidates do not have the required document(s) and their results will subsequently be cancelled.”
Cases of exam cheating dropped by half in 2010, from 1,711 in 2009 to 534. However, officials are concerned that cheating had mutated into different forms, including attempts by some school head teachers to bribe invigilators to allow them to give answers to candidates.
Alliance High School topped in the 2010 Form Four exam results with a performance index of 11.2570 out of a possible 12.
Albert Kamau Wandui of Moi High School Kabarak was the best KCSE candidate with a performance index of 87.10357.
The best girl was Lydia Katini Mwangasha of Kenya High who had a performance index of 87.04229 but ranked fifth overall.
