The convict who is serving a life sentence is said to have displayed symptoms of mental instability
Two inmates at the Kamiti maximum security prison were killed Wednesday by another convict who is serving a life sentence.
Christopher Njoroge, alleged to have been suffering from a mental illness, is said to have killed his colleagues by brutalizing them with crutches - one of them dying on the spot and the other succumbing to his injuries at the Kenyatta national hospital.
The convict, who is serving a life sentence for a capital offence, is said to have displayed symptoms of mental instability before the shocking incident.
Despite his condition being attended to at the prison's medical facility, the middle-aged man ran berserk just before dawn, killing two of his colleagues.
Senior deputy commissioner of prisons Benjamin Njoga says they will await post-mortem reports to ascertain the actual circumstances that caused the death of the two convicts, who were also on life sentence adding that the families of the deceased will be contacted on conclusion of the probe.
Njoga says Njoroge will face murder charges for the crime but the lingering matter is the safety of Kenyan prisons owing to the congestion and other deficiencies of the country's correctional system.
