Gang Steals Sh50m from Eastleigh bank

By Cyrus Ombati

Suspected gangsters struck Eastleigh Barclays Bank branch on Sunday evening and escaped with over Sh50 million.
The gunmen posing as customers struck at around 6pm after armed police who were on duty left.
The branch operates on Sundays due to booming business in Eastleigh area.
Police said the Administration Police who were guarding the bank handed over to night guards and left.
One of the gunmen is said to have gone to the entrance after the bank closed and pleaded with the guard to open for him as he had a large sum of money to deposit.
The guard allegedly opened only for the man to be followed by two other people also claiming to be customers.
The gangsters allegedly whipped out guns and walked to the strong room, took the cash before walking out of the bank.
There was no shooting during the incident and it is not clear whether the gangsters fled on foot or had a getaway car.
Nairobi Area CID boss Peter Muinde said the management claimed that they had Sh53 million collected on Saturday and Sunday.
Police are questioning the bank’s staff, guards and APs who were on duty as investigations into the incident commenced.
They are also reviewing CCTV tapes as part of the investigations.
