Prime Minister Raila Odinga has called for an end to violent demolitions of houses and other structures in Nairobi and other towns.
Mr Odinga condemned the brutality with which houses were being pulled down, stating that in the latest eviction at Mukuru kwa Njenga in Nairobi, a seven-year-old child was killed and a woman electrocuted. (READ: Three killed in Nairobi slum eviction chaos)
The PM described the demolitions as inhuman and unbearable, and which send wrong signals to citizens who had hoped for better governance with the coming of the new Constitution.
Mr Odinga said the Constitution guarantees the right to housing and said evictions be halted until measures are put in place to ensure that those affected have alternative places to stay.
This came as it emerged that the woman killed by a stray bullet in Mukuru slums during evictions on Saturday was waiting for transport to vacate the area.
Irene Ndinda, 25, had packed her belongings and was on her way to a friend’s house.
The friend, Ms Susan Mwikali, told the Nation that her visitor was eating a deadly bullet hit her in the stomach.
“I heard a gunshot and saw Ndinda fall on the floor groaning with both hands holding her stomach” Ms Mwikali said.
Nairobi deputy PPO Moses Ombati said police had launched investigations into the matter.
“We have established that the bullet was fired from a G3 rifle and we have taken all the rifles used for ballistic examination,” Mr Ombati said.
