NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 11 – The committee set up by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to investigate the saga involving Deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza and security guard Rebecca Kerubo has concluded interviewing witnesses.
Committee chairman Reverend Samuel Kobia earlier said that the committee was aiming to start writing its report later on Wednesday evening and complete the same on Thursday ahead of the Friday deadline.
The committee which was set up on Monday is expected to make its recommendation to the JSC by Friday January 13.
The committee spent Wednesday afternoon grilling Gigiri Divisional Criminal Investigation Officer Peter Mungai, Rebecca Kerubo’s husband and Eric Omondi who is the DCJ’s driver.
Also grilled in the late afternoon session was a doctor from the pharmacy which the deputy Chief Justice visited and communications consultant John Nyongesa who volunteered information to the committee.
“Eric Omondi {Baraza’s driver} will be the last witness then we direct our efforts to writing the report that we hope to start piecing together this (Wednesday) evening,” said Kobia.
Earlier Nairobi Provincial Criminal Investigation Officer Patrick Muinde was grilled by the Committee as well as Mohammed Amin from CID headquarters.
Three security officials at the Village Market were also grilled.
They were; the security supervisor who was on duty on the day of the incident, the acting chief security officer, the person who was in charge f the CCTV control room and a guard who worked alongside Kerubo.
Kobia said that the committee was now in possession of the CCTV footage of the village Market incident after Tuesday’s visit to the establishment.
“This is not a trial; what we are trying to do is to establish the facts as they are, a true story of what happened. We watched the footage on Tuesday but now we have obtained a copy,” he said.
On Tuesday Baraza and Kerubo separately appeared before the seven member committee for grilling.
Meanwhile, Solomon Gichira who petitioned the JSC for the removal of the Deputy Chief Justice has said that he expects the JSC to forward his plea, the findings by the police and the Judiciary’s own findings to the President to institute measures for the DCJ’s removal from office.
“I am looking at 12th of January 2012 as the day that marks the end of judicial classification of the Kenyan citizenship through class, influence and social status. It will be the day that JSC gave the “man in the street” reason to obey the law,” the statement further read.
Baraza is reported to have confronted the security guard who wanted to carry out a routine screening on her on New Year’s Eve as she entered a chemist at the mall.
