THE Democratic Party of Kenya has criticiSed the distribution of the newly created constituencies by the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission, recommending that at least every county should have a new constituency.
Party deputy secretary general Njagi Kumantha says the distribution as is refracted in the report released last Monday ''will create a lot of controversy in the country''. ''The commission ignored social and political dimensions which are very crucial in the country and only depended on the population and geographical factors in creation of the new parliamentary electoral areas,'' he said.
Dr Kumantha, who is also aspiring for the Embu county governor seat, said DP is of the view that every county that has at least four constituencies and above should be given a new constituency. ''By giving at least every county a new constituency, the people in the counties will have a sense of belonging and recognition and thus support the newly-created constituencies,'' he said.
He said most of the counties which have not been given new constituencies will vigorously oppose the proposed constituencies. Dr Njagi who is also a member of the National Political Liaison Committee (NPLC) said the counties with less than four constituencies should be considered depending on the population of their people and other geographical factors.
He said after all the counties are given a share of the 80 requires constituency each the remaining constituencies can be distributed according to the population and geographical factors. Dr kumantha said this formula will reduce a lot of friction that is bound to occur as the commission collects views on the report for the the coming mandatory twenty one days.
He said the Party will also make formal recommendations to the IEBC so that they can be considered before the final list is made. Dr Kumantha said creation of new electoral areas is usually a very sensitive issue and thus all the relevant factors should be considered to create harmony.
