THE Democratic Party of Kenya is now threatening to take Eldoret North MP William Ruto to court for forming the United Republican Party, which it says is meant to manipulate youth affiliated to the Mombasa Republican Council. Speaking to the Star, DP's national vice chairman Rishad Amana said the party has already written to the registrar of political parties asking her not to register the party.
His sentiments come as Ruto prepares to officially unveil the party. Ruto formed the party  after failing to consolidate the United Democratic Movement. Amana said, “We are going to court. The mischief in forming the URP is meant to confuse youth in MRC and try to consolidate their ideas with the party yet the two are two different entities.” Amana said there is a ‘‘big risk’’ if the party is registered and added that such outfits should not be entertained. “The registration of such parties will automatically spell doom for Kenyans especially from the Coast region. Why don’t politicians take advantage of the many existing parties to launch their bid instead of having ‘new vehicles’ as they put it?” He said.
Amana said that Ruto and his team had selfish interests in forming URP and added that MRC has justified reasons which they want the government to address. “I personally support the MRC and I feel so bad when people want to tarnish their mission for their own selfish and personal gains,” Amana said. He hit out at Tourism minister Najib Balala over claims that he also intends to form a new party, the Independent Party of Kenya. He said the name, which has initials similar to the once famous Islamic Party of Kenya, is meant to disenfranchise Coastal people who are not Muslims.
