Police have arrested a suspect and recovered a vehicle that was used by robbers who stole 26 tonnes of sugar on transit last week.
Earlier, police had recovered 63 bags out of the total 520 bags of the sugar that was imported from Brazil in Eastleigh estate, Nairobi.
Athi River police boss Charles Kirinya said that the owner of the vehicle claimed that he had hired out his car to another person, and that he was neither concerned not aware of its use in the commission of the robbery.
The consignment of 520 bags worth Sh10 million arrived in Mombasa on December 13 and was to be transported by road to Kampala.
It left Mombasa on Sunday, being transported by Mombasa-based Inland Africa Logistics Limited.
On reaching Athi River, the trailer was blocked by armed robbers of a saloon car who took control of the vehicle.
They put the driver and the turn boy in the saloon car and dumped them in Kola Market, about 70 kilometres from Machakos, after drugging them.
The truck and the container, serial number GLDU5079863SEAL MSC1134720LLD, was later found abandoned in Emali.

The matter was reported to the police and through Navisat technology that enables visibility of cargo and fleet when in storage and on transit, the consignment was traced to Eastleigh’s 1st Avenue.
Kenya Revenue Authority officials and detectives who posed as buyers of sugar went top Eastleigh and were directed to two stores.
The KRA officials confirmed that the sugar was not meant for local market.
The officers recovered 392 bags of sugar at Y.H Wholesalers and another 38 bags were recovered from Diamond Wholesalers.
The director of Inland Africa Logistics Mr Roy Mwanthi has complained to the KRA’s Commissioner General saying that though the officers found the 430 bags of sugar, they never recovered it.
Mr has also complained to the CID boss claiming that as soon as the officers started loading the sugar into a truck the police were recalled.
