There has been notable improvement in 2011 KCPE examinations Once again male students have dominated the top ten positions across the country in this year's Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams. In the results released Wednesday by Education Minister Prof: Sam Ongeri, Kagiri Christine Muthoni  and Irungu Martin Waiharo were the joint best candidates amassing a total of 442 marks out of a possible 500. Christine is from Tender Care Junior Academy School in Komarock Estate while Martin is from Moi Educational Center in Nairobi West. 14 candidates were in the top ten spots with boys clinching nine and girls five. Announcing the results at Mitihani house, Ongeri  said the candidates overall performance this year remained almost the same level as that of last year though 5,806 candidates scored over 400 points compared to 2,723 in 2010. " This year the quality of performance is therefore much better compared to last year" he said. Top candidates scored 442 marks compared to 434 and 438 scored by top candidates in 2010 and 2009 respectively. Compared to 2010, the performance in English and Kiswahili had dropped from 49 to 47% and 42.70 to 42.4% respectively, a similar trend witnessed in Mathematics and social studies but there were improvements in science and religious education.  Kirinyaga County was ranked the best of the 47 in the country ahead of Nandi, Makueni, Uasin Gishu, Busia, Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet in that order with the bottom five counties all from the coast region. There are 47 counties in the country. County rankings data may expose certain historical disparities to the attention of the revenue allocation commission since education indicators are critical to showing the inequities of resource allocation as the country implements County governments.      Candidates and parents can access the results from the Kenya National Examinations Council website - www.knec-results.ac.ke/ or through mobile phone by typing the candidate's index number and sending the message to 5052. He noted that students should not be made to repeat classes as this has a negative impact on performance. He highlighted schools in Kwale, Kilifi, Taita Taveta and Tana River as topping in the list of overage students who sit the KCPE examinations. Kilifi and Kwale lead the pack with 2,776 and 1,453 over-age candidates respectively. "Making children repeat classes and also taking them when they are overage above 14 years adds no value. The older the student the lower the performance," he added He therefore urged teachers, parents and other stakeholders to be in the frontline to reverse the trend.
