Kenya yesterday edged closer to forming the Salaries and Remuneration Commission after Parliament received 13 names of the persons nominated to join the body. The names have been submitted to the Clerk of National Assembly by Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura.
Speaker Kenneth Marende directed the names be forwarded to the departmental committee on Finance, Planning and Trade for consideration and report on them tabled by November 29. The names include that of chairperson Sarah Serem jointly nominated by the President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Others are Peter Aloo Aringo nominated by Parliamentary Service Commission, Daniel Ogutu nominated by Public Service Commission and Judicial Service Commission nominee Sellestine Kiuluki.
Others are Teachers Service Commission's Serah Kinyua, Defence Council nominee Brigadier (retired) Samuel Kirugi, Senate nominee Jason Namasake and the Central Organisation of Trade Unions' nominee Isaiah Kubai.
In the list also is Federation of Kenya Employers' nominee Jacqueline Mugo, Association of Professional Societies in East Africa nominee Anne Owuor and the nominee of Cabinet secretary Finance permanent secretary Joseph Kinyua and Public Service PS Titus Ndambuki. The AGs office has nominated Solicitor General Wanjuki Muchemi. Marende informed MPs that the National Police Service, which should also have a nominee, will forward its name once it is constituted.
As per Article 230 of the constitution, the powers and functions of the commission include settting and regularly reviewing the remuneration and benefits of all state officers, including MPs.
