Prime Minister Raila Odinga should appear in Parliament and clarify the extent to which Kenyan politics is being funded by drug money, MPs have demanded.
The lawmakers objected to a decision by Raila to delegate the duty of issuing the statement to Deputy PM Musalia Mudavadi. Led by Danson Mungatana(Garsen), Gitobu Imanyara (Imenti Central) and Mike Mbuvi (Makadara) the MPs claimed that Raila alleged at a public function recently that drug money was financing elections in the country and he should personally clarify the same in Parliament. Mungatana accused Raila of “escaping questioning'' by delegating the issuance of the statement to Mudavadi.
Mungatana has put a question to be answered during the Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s hour wanting the PM to clarity the extent to which Kenyan politics is being funded by drugs money, particularly whether the funds are channeled to political parties or specific individuals. He also wants the PM to provide the names of those who have been receiving drug money for election purposes. Mungatana also wants Raila to explain in Parliament the amounts involved.
The MP also has sought an explanation on what action the government has taken to have the matter investigated and culprits brought to book.
Mbuvi claimed that Raila was earning Sh2 million per month ''which is taxpayers' money'' and should be ready to respond to questions asked by the MPs. Mudavadi told the MPs that the question was directed to PM's Office and not to Raila as a person.  He said it was in order for him to issue the statement the Standing Orders allow him to do so.
But House Speaker Kenneth Marende said the claims by Mungatana that Raila said the elections are funded by drugs money were serious. Marende directed Mungatana to give evidence to support the claim to his office to enable the Speaker give directions on the matter next week.
