Western MPs boycott meeting

Share/Save/Bookmark MPs from Western province yesterday boycotted a meeting in Nairobi to discuss poor education standards in the province. Cabinet minister Wycliffe Oparanya was the only MP who attended the meeting organised by education lobby group Uwezo Kenya. Prof John Mugo said they had invited all 24 MPs from Western province to the meeting.
Oparanya could also not explain what happened to his fellow legislators. “I had talked to four of them yesterday…I do not know what happened,” Oparanya said as he pointed out that part of the reason why the province has poor education standards is poor leadership and poverty. Uwezo Kenya’s recent report showed that only three out of 10 Standard 3 children in the province can read simple paragraphs in English and Kiswahili.
Western was the worst performer followed by North Eastern province. "When we talk about leadership it entails us politicians and the little interests the provincial administration has on education matters," Oparanya said. The minister also asked residents of western province to stop insisting on having teachers from the same locality to teach in a school. “This will mean that there is no competition shared or learnt from outside.” He said.
