Nairobi Central and parts of Rift Valley should be prepared for another cold week with occasional showers spreading into the regions from western Kenya.
The cold weather, which continues from last week with Nyahururu hitting a low of 5.1°C on Wednesday, could also see some heavy showers in parts of Turkana and West Pokot.
According to a seven-day weather forecast for the period ending on Thursday, the Kenya Meteorological Department says parts of western Kenya and the lake region may get above normal rainfall.
Afternoon showers
People in Nairobi are told to expect cool cloudy early mornings with light rains over few places and mainly sunny intervals with occasional afternoon showers.
August, which ends on Wednesday, also brings an end to the department’s three-month forecast from June which has been uncannily correct having told of a generally cold period with increased rainfall in western Kenya.
For the period July to August, the weathermen predicted enhanced rainfall in western and lake region and depressed rains in the cost and central Rift Valley.
Most areas in the central highlands and Nairobi, the forecasters had said, were expected to experience cool and cloudy conditions with occasional drizzles or light rains to the end of August.
Most of the arid areas had been predicted, as it turned out, to remain dry for the three-month period. But the spotlight remains on the weathermen for their next seasonal forecast covering the rest of the year.
Like the May to July forecast what weather comes along in the next three months is crucial as it covers the short rains period hoped to break the drought jinx that has dogged the hunger stricken northern parts of the country.
A cautious look by the weathermen into the remaining part of the year rules out the possibility an El Niño or La Niña induced phenomenon.
