A UN agency has started teaching MPs against inciting the public in next year’s election campaigns.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aims to teach MPs to build trust between parties and curb hate speech.
They are also being taught how to develop negotiation, communication and conflict transformation skills.
Also on the syllabus will be enhancing the capacity of new institutions in line with the new Constitution.
More than 20 MPs from all political parties underwent the training at Serena Hotel, Mombasa at the weekend.
All the MPs are expected to have been trained by the end of the year.
“The training is meant to ensure that leaders don’t incite their communities or political parties against others during the polls,” a statement by the UNDP said.
Video clips of the violence that saw 1,133 people killed and another 600,000 displaced are being screened during the workshop and the methods that were used to unite communities taught.
The workshop is being spearheaded by International Conflict and Peace experts with the help of local resource persons.
