Foreign Affairs Assistant minister Richard Onyonka was Thursday grilled by the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (KACC) detectives over the purchase of sugar worth Sh137 million using CDF cash.
Mr Onyonka, who is also the Kitutu Chache MP, is alleged to have used CDF funds to purchase sugar worth Sh137,058,429 from Chemilil Sugar Company and did not remit  VAT worth Sh18.5 million to the Kenya Revenue Authority.
The minister arrived at Integrity Centre at 8.30am and left at around 12.30pm after recording his statement. He was accompanied by his lawyer Edward Oonge.
Mr Onyonka said that he could not embezzle funds meant for the poor and insisted that the allegations were politically motivated. He said that he will continue serving Kenyans but if found guilty, he would resign from his position.
However, KACC spokesperson Nicholas Simani said that their investigations were very independent and that they are interested in the evidence and not the person giving the evidence.
“Our investigations are based on information we get objectively and right now detectives are at Chemelil Sugar factory to finalise the investigations,” said Mr Simani.
He also said that investigations were at an advanced stage and key witnesses had recorded statements at the Commission
Mr Simani said the file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with appropriate recommendations upon completion of the investigations.
